Founder’s Story: The Dance of Passion and Perseverance
Beginnings in Mumbai
Mayur Akhani’s journey with Garba began not on the dance floor, but as a young boy in Mumbai’s bustling streets. Growing up attending non-traditional Garba dances, he found himself amidst a sea of swaying bodies, each dancer expertly following the intricate steps. With limited exposure to the original dance forms and no formal training, Mayur felt the weight of the challenge. The dense metropolis offered little space, both physically and metaphorically, for a novice to learn the age-old dance form.
A New Beginning in the USA
Years later, Mayur’s path led him to the USA, specifically the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. His professional journey took precedence, but the memories of those challenging Garba nights in Mumbai never quite left him. Fate had its own dance mapped out, leading him to the DFW Hindu Temple. Nestled at 1605 N Britain Rd, Irving, TX 75061, this temple had been a hub for Garba enthusiasts for over two decades. Here, he found a community that welcomed him with open arms. The seasoned dancers at the temple rekindled Mayur’s latent passion, mentoring him in the traditional steps of Garba.
The Birth of GarbaLovers.com
While Mayur’s enthusiasm for Garba grew exponentially, he noticed a significant gap – there wasn’t a consolidated platform listing all local Garba events. To bridge this gap, he started with a simple Google sheet shared amongst friends and fellow dancers. Recognizing the potential and need for a centralized platform, Mayur secured the domains GarbaLovers.com, DandiyaLovers.com, and NavaratriLovers.com. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that he decided to transform this idea into a tangible reality.
With unwavering determination, Mayur, with the invaluable help of his close friend Sajeed Lakhani, set up the hosting. What followed was an intense 24-hour marathon, culminating in a fully functional website just in time for the 2023 Navratri season. To bolster awareness, Mayur innovatively spread the word, distributing business cards imprinted with QR codes leading to GarbaLovers.com and even fashioning kurtas branded with “GarbaLover.com”.
